She’s Leaving Home

She left for college last week, my youngest daughter. She was so excited and busy preparing. We were out together and I wanted to take her picture.

No.

Why not?

People are watching.

Come on, just stand over there. The light is nice.

She can be that way, stubborn, strong willed, opinionated. If there were still knights in the world, I’m sure she would be among their order, defending the weak, championing the right and the good against injustice. She was not shy about telling me when my decisions were, in her opinion, unjust. She was, often, like now, embarrassed by my actions.

Dad, not now.

I took a picture of her shadow as she walked away. I didn’t ask for permission.

She is gone, away to college. I am confident that in her studies she will find a grail, or bring back an elixir that will change the world. Her quest has certainly changed mine.

Our house is much quieter. I don’t wait up at night for her to come home. Her room is clean.

Yet, in the early morning, I still catch glimpses of her shadow and I find that I miss the light of her smile.

Sunset over Lake Mountains, Utah

As a film maker and photographer, I am constantly in search of light. I study light, the quality of light, the direction of light, the effects of light. I work diligently to capture the light, practically and metaphorically. Yet, I stand in awe of the Master of Heaven and Earth and Sky. I am continually inspired and surprised by the majesty of his ‘lighting design’. I realize that I have so much to learn. As we approach this Easter Season, I am led, as Moses of old to exclaim,

Now, for this cause I know that man is nothing, which thing I never had supposed. Moses 1:10

Yet, the Master knows each of us by name. The light which lighteth the world giveth light to our minds and comfort to our hearts. There is light in Heaven. Angels surround us. In the sky above and the earth beneath, the day of miracles has not ceased.

And, this sunset was incredible. 🙂

Alexandra Township, South Africa–The People Inside

From a distance, Alex looks interesting. The closer you get, the harder it is to see. It can be beautiful, in a flowering African Thorn Bush kind of way. The flowers are pretty–sort of. The thorns can do some real damage. Among the thorns in Alex, there is an energy, growing, changing. In spite of the harshness of conditions, there was a softness in the faces of people. Not all were willing to let me take their picture. Some approached with angry words. Others turned away or hid. But, for those who stood their ground or gave permission, I could see a light, hard light perhaps, in their eyes. The noon-day sun did not make for the best photographs. However, in the hard light of the noon-day sun, when I put on my sunglasses, I could see hope.
